The name "Maroochydore" comes from the Aboriginal word for "Home of the black swan", a reference to the stunning wildlife that make the Maroochy River their home.

The public transport in Maroochydore is accessible via train and connecting bus via Nambour Station, Woombye Station, and Landsborough station on the Nambour. Operated by Queensland Rail's Citytrain and TransLink. 

Various bus routes connect Maroochydore to Buderim, Coolum, Kawana, Caloundra, Nambour and Noosa.
