The town of Viareggio is the second largest within the province of Lucca and is a popular, up-market seaside resort. It is a major part of the Tuscan Riviera, known as Versilia, which has a sandy beach stretching for more than 20km. 

The main city of the northern Tuscan Riviera, Viareggio began as a medieval fishing village, then later gained renown for its shipbuilding. In the mid-19th century, the town was developed as a seaside resort, which it’s been ever since.

Today, the city is loved for its long beaches, pine woods, great shopping and lively nightlife. It’s also home to the famous carnival of Viareggio, dating back to the late 19th century and one of Europe’s most important carnival events.

Viareggio is a classic seaside resort town complete with a climate that remains mild year-round. As can be expected for such a destination, the summers are hot during a time. June and August are the hottest months, with Average temperature 26.5 °C. The region sees over 270 sunny days every year. The summers are especially sunny. Rain during the summer months takes the form of short but powerful thunderstorms. 

During the winter, This time of year sees more rain and cloudy days and temperatures are cool but not extremely cold. The average highs during the coldest months, December, January and February, Average low-temperature 11.0 °C.

The city is very convenient to travel on foot. This way you can see all of its sights and visit the most beautiful places of Viareggio. The city is distinguished by a well-developed public transport system. Bus tickets must be purchased in special kiosks in advance. You will find them close to each traffic stop.


     

Party with the Locals in Viareggio: This crowning event of the six-day festival has an intoxicating, joyful flair. Begins on January 27th and ends on February 17th.

Carnaval di Viareggio: Its main characteristic is given by the parade of floats and masks, usually made of paper-pulp, depicting caricatures of popular people, such as politicians, showmen and sportsmen; the parade is held on the Viareggio avenue located alongside the local beach.

Beaches: The coast is lined with sandy beaches, most part of privately owned facilities although there is a free beach area in the south part of the city. Most facilities have a snack bar too. The sea is usually calm and good for swimming.

Promenade: A long seafront promenade lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants runs between the beach and town. The south end has Liberty-style architecture. 

Pineta di Ponente: The large pinewood park, just two blocks from the beach, is a good place for walking and escaping the sun.
